Cutting Board Care Instructions:
Your cutting board was treated with a food safe cutting board oil followed by a food safe wood wax. The cutting board oil protects it against water and moisture. Wood wax is a thicker finish that offers extra surface protection in addition to the oil. Both finishes used on your board are very easy to apply and were manufactured by “Walrus Oil” (it’s just a name! No actual walruses involved!). They are available for purchase online along with many other options. Apply the oil and/or wax several times a year to prevent the cutting board from drying out. Actual treatment frequencies vary greatly depending on use and may range from every 1-2 weeks to once a year. If you notice the cutting board looks dry or has lost its shine then it is time for treatment.
End grain cutting boards are excellent at hiding knife marks and keep your knives sharper compared to traditional face grain or edge grain cutting boards (or plastic). This is because the wood grain is oriented vertically. An example of a face grain or edge grain cutting board is like a paint brush laying on its side – when you cut down across the bristles you will cut the bristles in half. An example of an end grain cutting board is like a paint brush with the bristles standing straight up – the knife will slide between the bristles instead of cutting them.
Cleaning: Wash your end grain cutting board with soap and warm water and immediately dry both sides of the cutting board with a towel. White vinegar can be used to disinfect and de-odorize if needed. NEVER submerge or soak your cutting board in water or place it in the dishwasher!
Care: Your cutting board will last a lifetime if well cared for! Water and heat are both enemies of all wooden cutting boards. Avoid liquids from pooling on the surface for prolonged periods of time and NEVER submerge or soak wooden cutting boards in water or place them in the dishwasher! Do not store wooden cutting boards near heat sources such as stoves, ovens or coffee makers and do not use them as a hot plate or trivet for hot items.
Tip: To minimize knife marks, use a sharp knife with appropriate pressure. Avoid pizza cutters, serrated knife blades and other items and foods that require a lot of downward force.
